If you’ve spent dozens of hours scouring the frozen seas of 4546B, you’ve probably stumbled across vague communications referencing a forgotten Alterra research outpost tucked far below the ice. I spent three separate playthroughs wasting oxygen, losing high-tier gear to leviathans, and getting hopelessly lost in cave systems before I finally locked down a reliable route for how to get to mercury 2 subnautica below zero. This guide is built from my own trial and error, with notes on how to avoid the most common mistakes, pack the right gear, and grab all the best loot once you arrive.
Prep Steps Before You Head to Mercury 2 Subnautica Below Zero
Don’t make the mistake I did on my first attempt, where I grabbed a basic Seamoth and a single oxygen tank and headed out blind. I didn’t even make it to the cave entrance before a Shadow Leviathan crushed my vehicle and left me stranded 500 meters below the surface. Taking 10 minutes to grab the right gear will save you hours of frustration and lost resources. You don’t need endgame gear to make the trip, but these items are non-negotiable:
You don’t need a Prawn Suit for this run, though if you have one with a depth upgrade you can bring it along for extra protection. I prefer running it with just a Seatruck because it’s far more maneuverable in the narrow cave systems leading to the outpost entrance. You’ll be able to make the entire trip to and from Mercury 2 Subnautica Below Zero in under 20 minutes if you stick to the prep steps outlined here.
Navigating the Open Water Route to the Mercury 2 Entrance
I always use Delta Station as my launch point for this run, since it’s the closest major outpost to the cave entrance, and it has easy docking for your Seatruck to top up power before you leave. Head directly southwest from Delta Station’s docking bay, staying at a depth of 200 meters as you go. You’ll pass through the Purple Vents biome first, just keep going straight past the thermal vents and the small groups of Squidsharks that patrol the area. They won’t bother you if you don’t get too close to their nesting spots.
After traveling roughly 800 meters from Delta Station, you’ll see the edge of the Tree Spires biome. You’ll recognize it immediately by the giant, glowing blue kelp-like trees that stretch from the seabed up to 100 meters depth. This is where you need to start paying attention, because Shadow Leviathans spawn in the western edge of the Tree Spires, and they will charge your Seatruck if you don’t stay alert. Drop down to a depth of 450 meters once you enter the Tree Spires, and follow the seabed as it slopes further down.
Keep your eyes peeled for a large, dark cave opening on the northern wall of the biome, roughly 530 meters below the surface. That’s the cave system that leads directly to Mercury 2. Don’t make the mistake I did on my first run, where I kept going deeper into the Tree Spires and ended up in the Fabricator Caverns with no air left. That was a very expensive death, I lost a fully upgraded Seatruck that run.
Traversing the Cave System to Reach the Mercury 2 Outpost
Once you pull your Seatruck into the cave entrance, you can leave it parked just inside, as the rest of the path is too narrow for even a compact Seatruck without storage modules. Grab your flashlight, scanner, and extra oxygen, then start making your way down the winding cave path. The cave is mostly linear, so you don’t have to worry about getting lost if you stick to the main path. You’ll pass a few small pockets of Alien Containment and some scattered Kyanite deposits along the way, feel free to grab those if you have space, they’re incredibly rare in earlier biomes.
About 3 minutes into the cave, you’ll hit a small opening that opens up into a massive underground cavern. The Mercury 2 outpost is built into the far wall of this cavern, roughly 580 meters below the surface. You’ll see the glowing orange Alterra logo on the side of the facility as soon as you enter the cavern, so it’s hard to miss. Watch out for a small group of Rock Punchers that nest in the cavern walls near the outpost entrance. They don’t do a ton of damage, but they can knock you back and make you waste oxygen if you’re not expecting them. I usually just swim around the edges of the cavern to avoid them entirely, it’s faster than fighting them off.
The outpost’s main entrance is unblocked, so you can swim right in through the loading bay. All of the interior sections are pressurized except for one lower level, so you can take off your rebreather for most of your time inside to save oxygen. Just make sure you keep it handy, we’ll talk more about that flooded section later.
Top Loot to Grab Once You’re Inside Mercury 2
The Mercury 2 outpost is mostly intact, so you can access almost all of its sections without having to cut through debris or use a laser cutter, though bringing one along will let you get into a few locked storage rooms. First, head to the research lab on the upper level of the outpost. You’ll find the blueprint for the Parallel Processing Unit here, which is required to progress the main story and build the Al-An transfer chamber. That’s the main reason most players make the trip to Mercury 2, so don’t leave without grabbing it.
Next, check the storage lockers in the crew quarters section. You’ll find stacks of Ion Batteries, Platinum, and Diamonds, all of which are hard to farm in large quantities earlier in the game. There’s also a hidden data pad in the captain’s quarters that reveals a huge amount of backstory about Alterra’s secret research on the Kharaa bacterium on 4546B, if you’re into the game’s lore. It’s a really cool read that adds a lot of context to the events of the original Subnautica too.
One thing to note: there’s a small leak in one of the lower level sections of the outpost, so don’t leave your rebreather in your Seatruck when you go inside. I made that mistake once, and I almost drowned when I wandered into the flooded section without realizing it. Once you’ve grabbed all the loot you want, you can follow the same path back out to your Seatruck, and head back to your base the way you came. If you’re lucky, the Shadow Leviathans will be patrolling a different part of the biome on your way back, so you won’t have to use your perimeter defense upgrade at all.
This route has worked for me across four different playthroughs, and I’ve never lost a vehicle or had to abandon a run halfway since I started following it. Whether you’re chasing story progress, rare loot, or just want to explore every hidden corner of 4546B, learning how to get to mercury 2 subnautica below zero is well worth the small amount of prep and travel time. Take it slow, pack the right gear, and keep an eye out for leviathans, and you’ll be walking through the outpost’s halls in no time. If you have your own tricks for making the run faster, feel free to drop them in the comments below.
